One day a tortoise and a jackrabbit decide to race. They outline their course, the rattle snake drew a starting line, and the coyote waved the flag to start the race. The jackrabbit races forward and flies past the tortoise. However, along the way he stopped to eat and took a nap. By the time he woke up the tortoise was just about to cross the finish line. Try as he might the tortoise, which had gone slowly but steadily, won the race. The moral of this story is to press forward, no matter how slow the going is, and never give up.
My Reaction to the book:
This is a great message for everyone, everyone will have trials, but if we press forward we can overcome them. It is also important that we do not get distracted by little or big things along the way. The race is a good analogy to life.
Potential Problems:
At first the rabbit was sort of bullying the tortoise. The tortoise also challenged the rabbit. In real bully situations, this is not the way to handle it. The right way is to turn the other cheek or to be calm. This is a negative issue that is mentioned during the book.
Recommendations:
This can be a great book to use in a classroom or home setting. Many activities can be branched off from this book. It ties into character education really well. It is a great book with a significant message. It only has text on one side of the page, and has many vibrant pictures. This adds to the reader and audience's further reading enjoyment.
