Author: Russell Freedman
Number of Pages: 160 pages
Genre: Non Fiction
Summary of Plot:
This is a biography of President Abraham Lincoln, designed for children. Along with text this book contains many photographs of President Lincoln’s life. The plot is typical of a biography, chronological. It started when Lincoln was born, and went through the time where his legacy continues after he got assassinated.
My Reaction to the book:
I found this book interesting. I learned many things about Lincoln. One thing I learnt that Lincoln had less than of a year’s worth of education because of his family duties. The plot was easy to follow and it was not boring. The author did a good job at setting up the plot and giving background information of events.
The photos were powerful; the photograph that had the biggest impression on me was one in which Lincoln was pictured before, during, and after the Civil War. The war’s impact was quite evident in his countenance. I think it was neat seeing the photos as they were taken in that time, just black and white.
Potential Problems:
Some of the pictures are graphic.
Lincoln’s assassination is talked about
Recommendations:
This book is great for learning about Abraham Lincoln, the civil war, and other lessons from that time period. This book will please many people because it has great text and influential photographs. This book has won a Newbery award. It has descriptive text. I feel like I know Lincoln quite a bit better after reading this. This can be used as a great resource in a classroom discussion.
